Peri-implant health and implant survival: a review of prevalence, trends, and clinical aspects

Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis remain the most common biological complications of dental implantation. Despite consistently high implant survival rates, their prevalence remains considerable. Contemporary epidemiological evidence indicates that inflammatory changes in the peri-implant soft and hard tissues are detected in a substantial proportion of patients. The prevalence of these conditions varies depending on the diagnostic criteria applied, duration of follow-up, and characteristics of the studied populations.
This review systematizes current data on the prevalence of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, analyzes temporal trends, and examines key risk factors along with their clinical implications. Particular attention is given to the role of systemic and local predictors of inflammatory progression, as well as the significance of biomarkers in the early diagnosis and prognosis of implant treatment outcomes.
